This 10-day Professional Development & Familiarization Retreat is an immersive journey designed exclusively for educators, specialists, and program leaders. Participants will move beyond the brochure to experience firsthand how GSA masterfully blends cultural immersion, community service, and academic themes including STEM, history, music, culture, and sports into transformative learning expeditions. From the vibrant cultural heartbeat of Kingston to the resilient farming communities of Manchester and the stunning natural beauty of the west coast, this retreat is curated for professional development, integration, and building GSA's credibility. Upon completion, participants will receive a Certificate of Participation recognizing their commitment to advancing global education.

Engage in three dedicated workshops on Experiential Learning Design, Fieldwork Risk Management, and Integrating Service-Learning into your curriculum.

• Stakeholder Engagement: Participate in a dynamic panel discussion with local tourism, business, and community leaders, and hold dedicated meetings with GSA's vetted local partners.

• Cultural & Historical Immersion: Journey through reggae's history at the Bob Marley Museum, explore Kingston's rich heritage, and experience the living legacy of the Charles Town Maroons.

• Community & Service: Connect with a Rastafarian Indigenous Village to learn about sustainable living and Ital cuisine, and engage in a meaningful service project demonstrating GSA's community-first approach.

• STEM & Nature: Discover Jamaica's world-renowned coffee in the Blue Mountains and witness the bioluminescent magic of the Luminous Lagoon.

• Coastal Adventure: Explore the iconic Boston Beach and Blue Lagoon, snorkel the crystal-clear waters of Negril's 7-mile beach, and witness a legendary sunset at Rick's Cafe.

Arrive at Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) in Kingston and be greeted by GSA's program leaders for a private transfer to Smokey Manor. Check in and settle into the serene surroundings. The retreat begins with a comprehensive orientation covering program objectives, safety protocols, and cultural sensitivity guidelines, followed by the first workshop. A warm Welcome Dinner provides the perfect setting to connect with fellow educators and the GSA leadership team.

Embark on a guided Kingston city tour, exploring the heart of Jamaica's history and culture. We will visit key heritage sites and museums, gaining context for the island's complex past and vibrant present. The tour culminates at the iconic Bob Marley Museum, the former home of the reggae king, for an immersive look into his life and global impact. After lunch at the museum's One Love Café, we dive into Kingston's dynamic art scene at the Kingston Art walk. This segment of the tour showcases how GSA integrates arts and humanities into its programs, connecting students with local artists and galleries. Following the tour, we will hold a dedicated session to meet with the local guides and cultural experts who partner with GSA, allowing for direct Q&A about their roles in student programs. Dinner at a celebrated local restaurant known for its authentic Jamaican cuisine. 

The GSA Method — Principles of Experiential Education. This interactive session introduces the core theories of experiential learning and demonstrates how GSA translates theory into practice. We will explore trip design, fostering student reflection, and setting the stage for transformative travel.

For the afternoon activity, participants will visit the National Gallery of Jamaica and nearby museums, to explore the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Jamaica. The session begins with a guided tour of the National Gallery, where attendees will view key collections that highlight Jamaican and Caribbean artists, focusing on pieces that reflect the island’s cultural identity, music influences, and historical themes. Following the tour, a local art expert or gallery curator will lead an interactive discussion on how art preserves history and culture, and its connection to social movements and educational themes relevant to the participants.

Next, the group will visit the Institute of Jamaica or another nearby museum to explore exhibits featuring historical artifacts, music heritage, and ethnographic items, encouraging attendees to connect visual arts with broader cultural and historical contexts. The afternoon will conclude with a group reflection and Q&A session, allowing participants to share insights and discuss how to integrate arts and cultural heritage into their teaching or tour programs. This activity not only offers an immersive cultural experience but also fosters professional dialogue with local stakeholders, aligning perfectly with the goals of the familiarization trip.

After an early breakfast, we journey east towards the lush parish of Portland. Our first stop is the Charles Town Maroon Community. Here, we will be welcomed by community leaders for an immersive experience into the history of the Maroons, descendants of escaped enslaved Africans who fought for and won their freedom. The visit includes storytelling, drumming, and dance, offering powerful lessons in resilience and cultural preservation.

Enjoy a traditional lunch prepared by the Maroon community. Afterward, we continue our journey to the coast to visit the world-famous Boston Beach, the birthplace of jerk cuisine, and the stunning Blue Lagoon, known for its mystical, deep-blue waters and cinematic history. This showcases how GSA blends deep cultural heritage with Jamaica's iconic natural attractions.

Check out from Smokey Manor and travel to the heart of rural Jamaica, Manchester parish. Upon arrival at the historic Tan-y-Bryn Estate, we will check in and have a brief orientation to this unique farm-stay accommodation. Enjoy a delicious lunch at the residence followed by an engaging panel discussion with local farmers and cooperative leaders. This stakeholder meeting will provide deep insights into the economic, environmental, and social factors affecting Jamaica, especially after hurricane Melissa. We will discuss how student service-learning and academic projects can meaningfully support communities. After our vibrant panel discussion, we will move into a facilitated discussion on how to connect field experiences to classroom curricula in subjects ranging from biology and economics to social studies. Dinner and relaxation 

The day begins with a hands-on service-learning project within a Manchester community. Working alongside our local partners (e.g., at a basic school or on a small farm), participants will experience a GSA service project firsthand. This activity is designed to demonstrate how projects are co-developed with the community to ensure they are meaningful and sustainable. Following the service work and lunch, we transition into our second formal workshop. Professional Development Workshop 2: Designing & Managing Impactful Fieldwork. This session focuses on the practicalities of leading students in the field. Topics include project management, student supervision, and a deep dive into risk assessment and mitigation strategies. We will use the morning's service project as a real-time case study. In the dinner at the estate, followed by a meeting with the leaders of the community project we assisted. This stakeholder session provides a transparent look at the partnership dynamics, challenges, and successes of GSA's service-learning model.

After a leisurely breakfast, we dedicate the morning to our final professional development session. Professional Development Workshop 3: From Experience to Curriculum.  This capstone workshop is a practical, hands-on session where educators will work in small groups to brainstorm and outline a proposal for a GSA-style trip for their own students. GSA facilitators will guide participants in integrating the week's experiences into interdisciplinary themes, aligning activities with learning objectives, and framing the value proposition for their school administration.

After a great session participants will travel to the vibrant town of Negril on Jamaica's western tip. After checking into our hotel, the afternoon is free for you to relax, process the morning's workshop, or explore the local area at your own pace.

We reconvene for dinner at a local restaurant in Negril, followed by an informal Q & A session with GSA's Program Manager, Raeann Simmonds & Co-founder Omar Evans, to discuss logistics, customization options, and the next steps for planning a student trip.

Experience one of the Caribbean's most beautiful coastlines. We will head to Negril's famed 7-mile beach for a guided snorkeling adventure. Explore the vibrant coral reefs and marine life, an activity that highlights GSA's environmental and marine biology program components. For those who prefer to stay dry, the white sand beach offers a perfect spot for relaxation and swimming.

Enjoy a casual beachside lunch. The early afternoon is free for leisure, allowing time for souvenir shopping at the local craft market or simply soaking in the laid-back atmosphere of Negril.

The day culminates with a visit to the world-famous Rick's Cafe. Here, we will witness the breathtaking sunset over the Caribbean Sea and watch the thrilling local cliff divers. This iconic experience is a staple of many GSA itineraries, blending natural beauty with exhilarating local culture. We will enjoy dinner with the sunset as our backdrop.

We travel to Montego Bay for a final, crucial session. Participants will present their trip proposals developed in the Day 7 workshop to a panel of GSA leaders and key local stakeholders (including partners in education, community service, and tourism). This simulates the approval process and provides invaluable, real-world feedback. The showcase is followed by a comprehensive panel discussion titled "Building a Successful Partnership with GSA." Panelists will include GSA staff, community partners, and past faculty leaders. This session is designed to answer all remaining questions about safety, logistics, student recruitment, and the collaborative process of building a custom program.

A festive Farewell Dinner celebrates the culmination of our journey. It's a time to honor the partnerships formed, celebrate the learning accomplished, and look forward to future collaborations. The evening will feature Jamaican music, food, and a final awards ceremony where Certificates of Participation are presented.

Final Jamaican breakfast followed by a closing circle for reflections, key takeaways, and commitments to action. Exchange contact information to continue the network of globally-minded educators. Private transfers to Sangster International Airport (MBJ) for departures.
